Japan’s consumer confidence rose more than expected in May, reaching 32.8 from 31.2 in April, according to the Cabinet Office's Economic and Social Research Institute. The figure exceeded analyst forecasts of 31.8.
The improvement was driven by stronger sentiment in durable goods spending (+1.2), income expectations (+0.8), overall lifestyle outlook (+2.9), and job prospects (+1.6).
Despite the uptick, the index remains below the neutral 50-point threshold, signaling continued pessimism among households.
