UK retail sales rose more than expected in April 2025, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics. Monthly sales increased by 1.2%, up from a 0.1% gain in March and well above the consensus estimate of +0.3%.
On an annual basis, retail sales grew by 5.0%, also beating forecasts of +4.5% and accelerating from December’s 1.9% rise. Core retail sales, which exclude fuel, rose 1.3% from the previous month, compared to market expectations of +0.3% and a +0.2% increase in March.
Year-on-year, core sales surged by 5.3%, more than double the 2.6% recorded in December and ahead of the projected 4.4%. The stronger-than-expected figures suggest solid consumer demand, despite ongoing economic uncertainty, and may influence future monetary policy decisions by the Bank of England.
