Spain retail sales rise faster in February

This robust performance reflects strong consumer demand and a resilient retail sector, with particularly noteworthy growth in non-food products. Sales of non-food items surged by 4.8%, marking a significant acceleration compared to the 2.2% increase in January. This uptick in non-food sales suggests a recovery in discretionary spending, as consumers became more confident in their purchasing behavior following the uncertainties of the previous year. Meanwhile, the sales of food, beverages, and tobacco also continued their solid growth, rising by 2.9% in February after a 3% increase in January. This steady rise indicates that demand for essential goods remains strong, contributing to the overall positive retail sales performance. The continued growth in this category signals that consumer habits in Spain remain somewhat stable, even amid shifting economic conditions.

Seasonally adjusted monthly basis figures

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail trade increased by 1.3% in February, recovering from a revised 1.2% decline in January. This rebound in monthly figures highlights the retail sector's resilience, with consumers continuing to engage in regular spending, especially in the face of any short-term economic challenges. Looking at the first two months of 2025, retail sales advanced by 3% compared to the same period a year ago, further reinforcing the positive trend in consumer activity and signaling a strong start to the year for Spain’s retail market.
