The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index in the U.S. fell to 39 in March 2025, marking a seven-month low, down from 42 in February and below the expected 42.

Current sales conditions declined by three points to 43, while sales expectations for the next six months remained unchanged at 47. Meanwhile, the traffic of prospective buyers dropped five points to 24.

Analyst comment

"Builders continue to struggle with high material costs, exacerbated by tariff issues, along with supply-side challenges such as labor and lot shortages. However, they are beginning to see regulatory relief to curb rising costs, as evidenced by the Trump administration's suspension of the 2021 IECC building code requirement and its decision to align the regulatory definition of ‘waters of the United States’ under the Clean Water Act with the U.S. Supreme Court’s Sackett ruling," said NAHB Chairman Buddy Hughes, a home builder and developer from Lexington, N.C.
