France's government budget deficit showed improvement in the January-December period of 2024, narrowing to €156.30 billion from €173.26 billion during the same timeframe the previous year.
France's budget deficit narrows in 2024
This positive development is attributed to a slight increase in total revenues, rising by 0.8% year-on-year to reach €357.20 billion, coupled with a decrease in total expenditures, which fell by 2.2% to €511.15 billion. Furthermore, the Treasury special accounts, which monitor the balance of inflows and outflows for specific targeted programs and outlays (such as receipts from local governments), also contributed to the deficit reduction.
Special accounts deficit shrinks
These accounts registered a shortfall of €2.35 billion, considerably less than the €5.10 billion gap recorded during the corresponding period in 2023. All figures are expressed in billions of euros and represent the cumulative totals for the period from January to December 2024.
