Spain saw a rise in registered unemployment in January 2025, with an increase of 38,725 people, or 1.5%, bringing the total number of jobless to 2.599 million.
Spain jobless up, but still low
While this figure represents the lowest January total in 17 years, it nonetheless marks a monthly increase, albeit smaller than the 45,400 rise analysts had forecast. The employment picture was mixed across sectors. Construction, industry, and those with no prior work experience saw decreases in unemployment, while the service sector and agriculture experienced increases. Youth unemployment, although rising slightly by 2,563 people (1.4%), remains at its lowest January level in recorded history, standing at 188,364.
Regional jobless rise in Spain
Regionally, the Balearic Islands were the only area to see a decrease in joblessness, while the majority of other autonomous communities experienced increases. The largest rises were concentrated in Andalusia, the Community of Madrid, and the Valencian Community.
