Passenger car registrations in the European Union increased by 5.1% year-on-year to a six-month high of 910,505 units in December 2024, rebounding from a 1.9% decline in November.

Spain led the growth with a 28.8% surge, followed by France, which posted a modest 1.5% rise. However, among the EU's four largest markets, declines were recorded in Germany (-7.1%) and Italy (-4.9%). In the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment, registrations dropped by 10.2% to 144,367 units, with BEVs capturing a 15.9% market share. This decline was driven by steep drops in registrations in Germany (-38.6%) and France (-20.7%).

Full year figures

For the full year 2024, total car registrations rose by 0.8% year-on-year to approximately 10.6 million units. Spain demonstrated resilience with a robust 7.1% growth rate. However, the sharp declines in BEV registrations in Germany and France resulted in a 5.9% decrease in BEV market volume compared to 2023. Consequently, battery-electric vehicles accounted for 13.6% of the total market share in 2024.
