Swiss manufacturing PMI slips to 48.4 in December 2024
The reading remained below the 50-point threshold, signaling continued contraction in the manufacturing sector.
Several sub-indices showed declines, including production (-2.5 points to 48.3), order books (-0.4 points to 49.7), sales stocks (-1.3 points to 46.5), and employment (-0.8 points to 44.7), indicating ongoing challenges for manufacturers.
Conversely, some components showed improvement: purchasing volumes increased (+1 to 47.1), purchasing prices rose notably (+3.6 to 51, signaling input cost pressures), delivery times extended (+1.6 to 50.9), and stocks purchased climbed significantly (+6.1 to 48.6).
Weak demand persists as supply chains show signs of stabilization
The mixed signals suggest that input price pressures and supply chain adjustments continue influencing the manufacturing landscape while demand remains weak. The slight improvement in purchasing-related metrics hints at some stabilization in supply chains, even as overall manufacturing activity struggles to gain momentum.
