Germany's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 6.1% in December 2024, slightly below the expected 6.2% but near its highest level since February 2021.

Unemployment rose 10,000 to 2.869 million, less than the forecasted increase of 15,000. "The winter break on the labor market begins in December, leading to the usual rise in unemployment and underemployment for this month," said Andrea Nahles, head of the labor office.

For 2024, the average unemployment rate increased to 6.0%, up from 5.7% in 2023. "The ongoing economic downturn in 2024 has left increasingly significant marks on the labor market," Nahles added.
