Retail sales in decline in October, ISTAT reports

In October 2024, retail sales showed a decline both in value and volume compared to the previous month. However, the year-on-year data shows an increase, with notable growth in large-scale retail and e-commerce.

October Retail Sales Show Decline
According to ISTAT data, October 2024 saw a drop in retail sales across both value and volume. The decline amounted to -0.5% in value and -0.8% in volume compared to September 2024. This decline was consistent across both food and non-food sectors.

Year-On-Year Growth for Retail Sales Despite the monthly decrease, the year-on-year figures show a positive trend, with retail sales rising by 2.6% in value and 1.5% in volume. This growth was driven primarily by large-scale retail and e-commerce, with traditional stores experiencing slower growth.

Sector Trends in Retail Sales
Food sales saw a decline of -0.7% in value and -1.4% in volume, while non-food sales also saw a decrease in both categories, though at a slower pace. Notable growth was observed in sectors like personal care products and household appliances, with increases of 6.4% and 6.1%, respectively.

Small vs Large Retailers: Differing Performance
In comparison to small retailers, large distribution networks and e-commerce platforms saw the strongest growth. The value of sales in e-commerce increased by 4.7%, while traditional retail outlets outside of physical stores experienced a small dip of -0.4%.

Quarterly Performance Shows Slight Increase
Looking at the period from August to October 2024, retail sales increased by 0.6% in value and 0.3% in volume. Both food and non-food sectors posted growth, with food sales gaining 1.1% in value and 0.3% in volume, while non-food sales grew by 0.4% in value and 0.3% in volume.

This analysis reflects ongoing trends in the retail sector, with a slight recovery in certain areas despite challenges faced by physical stores.
