Italy's trade surplus increased slightly to EUR 2.580 billion in September 2024, up from EUR 2.393 billion a year earlier, aligning closely with market expectations of EUR 2.55 billion.

Imports dropped by 3.2% year-on-year to EUR 47.929 billion, driven mainly by declines in capital goods (-2.1%) and energy (-34.6%). Purchases fell from France (-0.4%), the US (-17%), and Switzerland (-17.9%), while rising from China (17.4%).

Exports drop as sales to major trading partners decrease

Exports decreased by 2.2% to EUR 50.508 billion, impacted by lower sales of capital goods (-6.7%), intermediate goods (-0.6%), and energy (-44.4%). Exports fell to Germany (-4.6%), France (-1.1%), and the US (-13.4%).
