UK car production fell 20.6% year-on-year to 70,039 units in September 2024, marking the seventh consecutive month of decline.

This decrease is attributed to the cessation of production for various models as manufacturers continue to retool for new zero-emission vehicles. The decline in September was also influenced by a strong performance during the same period last year, which had been the best since 2020. SMMT CEO Mike Hawes commented, “As the UK automotive industry undergoes its most significant transformation in over a century, these short-term production declines were expected, representing a temporary adjustment for long-term growth.”
SMMT urges government incentives as EV production plummets 37% in September
Earlier this month, SMMT sent an open letter to Finance Minister Rachel Reeves urging government incentives for private buyers to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). Production of EVs dropped 37%, with 21,309 units manufactured in September.
